8th Workshop - Joint ISWG and LSA-SAF Workshop

IPMA, Lisbon, 26-28 June 2018

The Land Surface Analysis Satellite Application Facility (LSA SAF) aims to increase the benefits accrued from EUMETSAT Satellites, specifically in the areas of terrestrial processes, land-atmosphere interactions and biospheric applications. Land surface models' assessment and improvement are among the target applications of LSA SAF products.

Past ISWG (International Surface Working Group) meetings have emphasized an importance of the Land Surface Modeling (LSM) component and ability to reproduce the space-bourne radiances. We will emphasize modeling and retrieval of land surface variables (temperature, vetetation, soil moisture), which are vital to get routine first order linkages between the LSM and the Earth Observing (EO) system.

This meeting focused a wide range of Scientific Topics related with the use of Satellite Data and Products to improve LSM, including:

Retrievals of surface parameters: land surface temperature, albedo, vegetation state, soil moisture, snow water equivalent, water-body extent, sea surface wind, salinity, canopy parameters, vegetation water content, sea-ice concentration, etc. and the resulting surface emissivity/reflectance spectra.

Model-data comparison: efforts involving EO dataset and shared experiences from ongoing surface monitoring systems.
