The "ENDVI10" or EUMETSAT Polar System NDVI are near-global, 10-daily composite images which are synthesised from the "best available" observations registered in
the course of every "dekad" by the orbiting earth observation system METOP-AVHRR. The product provides the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) together with the radiation reflectance bands. For more detailed information, please visit http://www.metops10.vito.be/
Monitoring of terrestrial surfaces, ecosystems mapping, biomass estimation, environmental monitoring.
The ENDVI10 product is created as part of the LSA SAF Operations from EUMETSAT. All the basic METOP-data, used for the creation of the ENDVI10, are provided by EUMETSAT. The water vapour data for the atmospheric correction are received from MeteoService. The processing chain was originally developed with funds of the MARS unit (Monitoring
Agriculture with Remote Sensing) of the EU Joint Research Centre in Ispra-Italy and the Belgian Science Policy Office (BelSPO-Brussels), before taken over by LSA SAF Operations. The ENDVI10 product contains a Land Surface Temperature (LST) layer added on courtesy of VITO, whereof EUMETSAT does not take any liability, responsibilities and ownership.

Coefficient of determination between paired, R, (same day and cloud/snow-free) observations between MEOTP-AVHRR and SPOT-VGT and/or other sensors.

EUMETSAT systematically ingests all the 1km resolution imagery registered by METOP-AVHRR. EUMETSAT calibrates the measurements to TOA-radiances, adds some ancillary information (Lon/Lat-planes, cloud/snow mask) and then distributes the results in near-real time via the EUMETcast broadcasting service. Via its EUMETcast antenna, VITO ingests all daytime-registered data. Each segment is first remapped to the Geographic Lon/Lat system with a resolution of 1/112 degrees (about 1 km). The shortwave bands (RED, NIR, SWIR) are
atmospherically corrected using the SMAC algorithm and the NDVI-layer is added. Land surface temperature (LST) is estimated using an advanced split window method. As to the distribution of the atmospheric constituents, standard climatologies are used for ozone and aerosols, but six-hourly data from ECMWF for water vapour. All the segments of a given dekad are then composited using a maximum NDVI rule with some constraints on the viewing angle and observation status (clear>snow>cloud) to generate the global 10-daily composites.
